The test stems from findings by CUHK investigators ¡ª who recently cofounded MicroSigX as a spinout of the university ¡ª that certain gut microbial community features are associated with autism spectrum disorder and could be used to diagnoses the condition.
Based on the research, which was published last year, the scientists developed the MSX Metagenie test that analyzes microbial signatures in fecal samples to generate an autism risk score. Last year, the technology received breakthrough device designation from the US Food and Drug Administration.
MicroSigX and CUHK have partnered for a pilot project that will offer the test through nonprofits to 200 children aged 18 months to 4 years who have shown autism symptoms but have no formal diagnosis, the university said.
The partners also plan to work with various nongovernmental organizations and neurodevelopmental experts to provide objective autism risk assessments and support to families of patients. Further, CUHK's medical department aims to establish a center to develop autism assessment training programs.
The initiative "not only marks a milestone in commercialization of research and development outcomes but also benefits the underprivileged local families by providing free tests to those in need with the assistance of nongovernmental organizations," Sun Dong, Hong Kong's secretary for innovation, technology, and industry, said in a statement.
