Illumina and Beckman Coulter Life Sciences said on Tuesday that they have partnered on application development for the Biomek NGenius next-generation library preparation system.

Under the terms of the agreement, Illumina will develop applications for the forthcoming automated liquid handling instrument. Financial and other terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"We are pleased to collaborate with Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, with its deep automation expertise, to expand laboratory access to our NGS-based oncology and genetic disease testing research," Joydeep Goswami, Illumina's chief strategy and corporate development officer, said in a statement. "Automating in-house testing will reduce turnaround times, improve customer experience, and ultimately enable laboratories to quickly provide relevant, actionable results to healthcare researchers."

The Biomek NGenius system is slated to launch in the second quarter of this year. According to Beckman Coulter, it will reduce manual transfers and hands-on time for NGS library construction by incorporating a reagent input carousel, integrated thermal cycler, and labware transport system.

Illumina joins IDT and Invitae, who previously signed on as application development partners for the Biomek NGenius.
