US-based Calibre Scientific has acquired German MoBiTech for an undisclosed amount to bolster its portfolio of diagnostic services.

Following the acquisition, MoBiTech will be integrated into Calibre¡¯s  subsidiary BIOZOL Diagnostica. Calibre has acquired 12 companies since January 2023, with all but three acquired companies based in Europe.

The recent deal marks the fourth diagnostic company purchase by Calibre in the past year. In March 2023, Calibre bought another German diagnostic provider, AlphaScience. In January 2023, the company purchased two diagnostics providers, UK-based Microm and US-basedScopescreen.

The diagnostic market experienced a boom during the Covid-19 pandemic, especially the in vitro diagnostics segment. The in vitro diagnostics market was worth approximately $42.9bn in 2023, as per GlobalData analysis. Increased availability of at-home point of care diagnostics was the main driver of the growth.

Multiple companies have invested in developing and deploying diagnostics in recent months, with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) being a major trend in the sector. In October 2023, Roche, Ibex Medical Analytics and Amazon Web Services (AWS) partnered to enable pathology laboratories to access Ibex¡¯s AI-powered decision support tools to aid in the diagnosis of breast and prostate cancer through Roche¡¯s navify Digital Pathology software platform.

In November 2023, Cardio Diagnostics Holdings received a contract from US-based Vizient for access to AI-driven heart disease tests. The contract covered Cardio Diagnostics¡¯ AI-driven molecular heart disease tests, including the Epi+Gen CHD and PrecisionCHD tests. These tests use AI to analyse epigenetic and genetic biomarkers from a patient¡¯s blood sample, to identify individuals at risk of coronary heart disease.

In October 2023, Canon Medical unveiled a new diagnostics and sports facility in Sheffield, UK. The medical equipment manufacturer has invested £14m ($17m) in the facility which houses multiple Canon products including Aquilion Prime SP CT scanner, Apilo i800 ultrasound machine and its Vantage Galan 3T high-powered MRI machine.
